Day Two - A Place of Conflict

Read Matthew: 26:36-56

On the night before Jesus went to the cross, Jesus was full of sorrow and deeply distressed. Jesus confided His deepest darkest distresses of the soul to Peter, James, and John. Sadly, the disciples did not understand what Jesus was communicating. Therefore, Jesus was confronted with conflicting emotions in a place called Gethsemane.

Jesus conflicted with His friends who could not stay awake to watch and pray. To watch means to stay awake. For the disciples to stand later, they needed to take heed of the warning to watch and pray.

Matthew 26:41b “lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus came again,

Matthew 26:43 “And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.” Jesus knew the implications for not watching and praying. Later, when Jesus was arrested all the disciples abandoned Jesus. Matthew 26:56.

Jesus was in inner conflict as He contemplated being separated from the Father. Luke the physician gives more detail about the level of the anguish of Jesus.

Luke 22: 44 “And being in agony, He (Jesus) prayed more earnestly.” “Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

Praying earnestly means to pray in the right mind sincerely with deep passion. James 5:16b. The necessity for fervent prayer must be remembered because of the conflicting emotions of love and agony of our Savior

Angels ministering to Jesus after the great conflict with Satan can be found in

Mathew 4:11“Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.” In the night of Gethsemane, Jesus was ministered to during the conflict. Luke 22:43 states, “Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

” Despite being the different levels of conflict, Jesus did not deviate from His

purpose and plan.

Observe Jesus the God/Man struggling in the Garden, when friends abandoned Him, and when He under spiritual attack. What did Jesus do? Jesus suffered something we will never experience, that is being separated from the Father. Jesus taught us during times of conflicting emotions we need to pray earnestly and fervently.

  • Praying scripture gives us the right mind to pray earnestly and fervently. James 5:16b
  • Praying is what we must do during conflicting times. James 5:13.
  • Being with the Father is the best place to be. Luke 6:12
  • Being with the Father is where to find comfort in conflicting times. Deuteronomy 31:8
  • Praying reaffirms we are never alone. Psalm 145:18
  • Pray for protection against temptation. Matthew 26:41

Read then journal the truths about comfort in conflicting times from
